Wentworth Hands WPI Men's Soccer Their First Loss
Wentworth 3, WPI 2
Boston, MA -- For the second consecutive game, senior forward
Dan Marra (Sea Cliff, NY) scored the game-winning
goal for the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team.
And, for the second consecutive game it came by way of a penalty
kick as he converted his third penalty kick in the last two games
in the 65th minute of play to snap a 2-all tie and lift the
Leopards (5-0-1) to a 3-2 win over WPI (5-1-1), the ninth-ranked
team in New England, 3-2.
The Leopards took a 1-0 lead at 16:43 when sophomore forward
Matt Martins (Bristol, RI) took a long feed from
classmate Ben Hamlin (Vernon, CT) and found an
opening on the left side of the net. Exactly six minutes later,
Martins would put Wentworth up 2-0 when he took a Marra feed and
scored his third goal of the season.
WPI cut the lead in half at 32:02 when senior midfielder
Matt Douville (Northbridge, MA) crossed the ball
to sophomore midfielder Benjamin Gilde
(Manchester, NH) whose diving header found the upper left corner of
the goal. Just 57 seconds into the second half, Douville would take
a pass from senior forward Sean O'Keefe (Walpole,
MA) and tie the game at 2-all.
Marra, who earlier in the day was named the Commonwealth Coast
Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season, was
fouled inside the box and was able to break the tie with his sixth
tally of the season.
Freshman Mike Gregory (Rockaway, NJ) made
eight saves for the Leopards, including seven in the second half
when Wentworth was outshot 14-7. WPI freshman Steve
Hoffer (South Glens Falls, NY), making his first
appearance of the season, made six saves for the Engineers, who
held a 20-14 shot advantage for the game.
Wentworth continues non-league play on Saturday as the Leopards
travel to Babson for a 2:00 kick-off against the sixth-ranked team
in the region. WPI will be back in action on Wednesday with a road
match at Framingham State at 3:30pm.
