WPI Men's Soccer ties Coast Guard in 2OT
WPI 2, Coast Guard 2 2OT
New London, CT --- Freshman Brandon McMillan's
(Peachtree City, GA) diving header with 6:23 left in regulation
tied the game as Coast Guard scored twice in the final 12 minutes
or regulaton and played WPI to a 2-2 double overtime tie in a New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
WPI senior tri-captain Matt Douville
(Northbridge, MA) scored in the 34th minute and assisted on
Ben Gilde's (Manchester, NH) goal with
exactly 38 minutes left in regulation giving the Engineers a 2-0
lead.
Coast Guard (8-3-3, 2-1-2) senior Rob Poitinger
pulled the Bears to within 2-1 on a goal off a free kick with 11:52
left in regulation.
McMillan's header came off a pass from senior Casey
Steuer, his team leading sixth assist of the season. The
shot by McMillan was the first shot of his career, appearing in his
sixth game this season.
Coast Guard has now played five conference games, each one has
gone to overtime. The Bears ran their unbeaten streak to four,
going 2-0-2 in the last four contests.
WPI (8-4-2, 2-2-1) had its three-game winning streak snapped, but
the Engineers are now riding a four game unbeaten streak.
Coast Guard outshot WPI 14-9. Senior tri-captain Brian
Catalano (Whitinsville, MA) made four saves for WPI
while freshman Tim Olah had two saves for Coast Guard.
WPI will return to action on Wednesday when they host Westfield
State at 7pm.
