Doyon Scores Lone Goal in 1-0 WPI Victory over Westfield State

Worcester, MA --- Jeff Doyon (Storrs, CT) tallied the only goal
of match as host WPI earned a hard-fought 1-0 non-conference
victory over Westfield State on Wednesday. The Engineers, who are
unbeaten in their last five matches, improve to 9-4-2 while
Westfield State dips to 9-7.
Doyon, a senior co-captain, netted his first goal of the season
when he headed home a cross from freshman Tommy Zajac (Merrimack,
NH) at 28:49. The assist was the first collegiate point for
Zajac.
The game was tightly contested throughout despite WPI enjoying a
14-9 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. The match
was physical as the two teams combined for 38 fouls.
WPI goalkeeper Brian Catalano (Whitinsville, MA) made five saves
while upping his record to an impressive to 9-1-2 on the season.
Michael Thompson (Feeding Hills, MA) recorded seven stops in a
solid performance in net for Westfield State.
Both teams will conclude the regular season with key conference
matches on Saturday at 1pm. The Engineers will host MIT with a
victory earning WPI a home match in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.
The Owls will entertain Salem State in a battle of MASCAC
co-leaders with the winner capturing the regular season title and
the top seed in the MASCAC Tournament.
