WPI Defeats MIT to Earn Home Match in NEWMAC Tournament

Worcester, MA --- Chris Lyons' (Jefferson, MA)
goal midway through the second half was the only tally of the day
as WPI earned a home match in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament with a
1-0 shutout over visiting MIT on Sunday afternoon. WPI is now
10-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in NEWMAC action while MIT drops to 6-10
on the season and 0-6 in conference play.
Lyons goal came as WPI was attacking with the gusty wind at its
back. He buried a pass from Brandon Finzel
(Northport, NY) at 62:17 to notch his fourth marker of the
season.
Each team's goalkeeper was asked to make an outstanding save in
the first half. WPI's Brian Catalano
(Whitinsville, MA) made a diving stop of a penalty kick at 26:08
while MIT's Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, PA)
registered a sprawling save following a corner kick with just 3:30
remaining before intermission.
On the day, Catalano notched three saves en route to improving his
record to an impressive 10-1-2. Caldwell was credited with four
stops.
WPI enjoyed an 11-7 advantage in shots and took four corner kicks
to MIT's one.
