Brian Catalano and Benjamin Gilde earn All-NEWMAC Honors in Men's Soccer
Worcester, MA -- WPI Men's Soccer players Brian
Catalano and Benjamin Gilde have been
named to the All-NEWMAC team on voting recently by the conference
coaches. Both players earned second team honors after helping coach
Malcolm MacPherson's squad finish 10-5-2 and earn a home match in
the NEWMAC Tournament.
Catalano (Whitinsville, MA) bounced back from a midseason injury to sport an impressive 10-2-2 record and a microscopic 0.90 Goals Against Average. The senior recorded seven shutouts on the season including key conference blankings of Springfield and MIT. Catalano was selected as NEWMAC Player of the Week on October 30th after posted shutouts against Westfield State and MIT.
Gilde (Manchester, NH) had a sensational sophomore campaign,
leading WPI with a team-best six goals and 15 points. He earned
NEWMAC Player of the Week honors on October 16th after notching the
game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout of Anna Maria on October 10th
and dishing out the game-winning assist in a key 1-0 conference
road win at Springfield on October 14th.
Gilde was also one of four Engineers to earn All-NEWMAC Academic
Team accolades. Also earning those honors were seniors Nick
Barraford (Amherst, NH) and Sean O'Keefe
(Walpole, MA) and junior Mike Monfreda (Sterling,
MA).
2006 NEWMAC Men's Soccer All-Conference Team Announced, Babson's
Winn, Anderson Named As Player, Coach Of Year, Springfield's
Schippers Tabbed As Rookie Of Year.
