WPI Men's Soccer drops to 2-4 with 4-1 loss to Worcester State

Worcester, MA --- Worcester State tallied a pair of goals following corner kicks as they defeated host WPI 4-1 in non-conference men's soccer action on Monday afternoon. With the win, Worcester State improves to 3-5 while WPI dips to 2-4.

The Lancers scored first in the 32nd minute when a corner kick deflected off the hands of the WPI goalkeeper right to Justin Beach (Tucson, AZ), who blasted it into the back of the net for his first goal of the year.

In the 58th minute, Worcester State took advantage of another corner kick and scored when Eder Baptista (Pawtucket, RI) hit a perfect cross to Wesley Simoes (Charlton, MA) who headed it in for his third goal of the season.  The Lancers extended the lead when Matt Brothers (Auburn , MA) scored his fifth goal of the year in the 75th minute.

WPI tallied its lone goal of the evening in the 81st minute following a wild scramble when Ben Gilde (Manchester, NH) knocked home his third goal of the season,  Jason Gray (Carver, MA) and Wade Mitchell-Evans (Cayman Islands) were credited with assists on the play.

The Lancers effectively put the game out of reach just 46 seconds later when Anthony Escobar (Leicester, MA) took the ball from a WPI defender and notched his first goal of the season. 

Daniel Hansen (Worcester, MA) made six stops between the posts for Worcester State while his WPI counterpart, Paul Moan (Watertown, MA), also registered six saves on the day.

WPI will hit the road for its next two matches.  The Engineers will head to Nashua , NH to play Rivier on Thursday at 7pm before traveling down Park Ave. to face city-rival Clark on Saturday at 1:30pm.  Worcester State returns to the pitch on Wednesday at 5pm at Plymouth State .
