Wenham, MA --- Gordon College freshman forward Matt Horth (Akron, OH) notched three second-half goals to lift the Fighting Scots past WPI, 3-0, this afternoon in non-conference play on The Quad on the campus of Gordon College.

In the first half the Fighting Scots (9-6-1) and Engineers (3-9) played an offensive-minded game as both teams saw several chances in the opening 45 minutes of play. WPI would put six shots on net while the Scots mustered four attempts on goal but neither side would score. The best chance for the Fighting Scots came in the 34th minute as junior midfielder Sean Lafferty (Lancaster, PA) struck a ball from 22 yards out which plastered the cross bar. Fighting Scots junior goalkeeper Brian Schilling (Goffstown, NH) turned away all six shots on net in the frame while WPI net minder Steve Hoffer (Lake Placid, NY) recorded four saves.

Just 1:24 after the intermission, Horth blasted a ball from the left side of the box which found the back of the net past the dive of Hoffer to put the Scots up 1-0. Ten minutes later, Horth struck again as sophomore midfielder Chuck Anderas (Green Bay, WI) sent a feed to Horth who kept himself onsides to set up a one-on-one with the WPI keeper; Horth skipped the ball past Hoffer for his team-leading 14th finish of the season.

With 11:50 to play in regulation, Horth converted on a penalty kick for his first career hat-trick and the 3-0 lead.

Despite an aggressive offensive attack down the stretch, the Engineers could not find the cage as Shilling registered his fourth shut-out of the season as he recorded 13 saves. The visitors registered 30 shots on the day including the 13 on net while the Scots put 16 on goal and Hoffer came up with 13 stops. Ben Gilde (Manchester, NH) paced the Crimson and Gray with six shots while Thomas Cucinotta (Easton, MA) added five.

The Fighting Scots are off until next Thursday (Oct. 25) when they battle Western New England College in the season finale at home at 3:00pm. The Engineers will look to snap a five-game losing streak against Coast Guard on Friday (Oct. 19) at home at 7:00pm.
