Ben Gilde Receives Men's Soccer All-NEWMAC Second Team Honors

Ben Gilde

Babson Park, MA --- WPI men's soccer midfielder Ben Gilde has been named to the All-NEWMAC second team on voting by conference coaches on Tuesday. Gilde has now earned the distinction of being named all-conference for the second straight year.

Gilde, a native of Manchester, NH, had an outstanding junior campaign, leading WPI in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12). The Crimson and Gray finished at 3-13-1 overall but tied second-seeded Babson in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament before the Beavers advanced on penalty kicks.

Already in 2007, Gilde has been named an ESPN The Magazine-CoSIDA District I All-Academic first team member for the second straight year. Gilde advances to the national ballot after being the only sophomore last season to garner Academic All-American honors.

Additionally, the Men's Soccer team captured the Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the men's soccer student-athletes of the NEWMAC. It marks the first time that head coach Malcolm Macpherson's squad has captured the award since its inception in the fall of 2006. Assistant coaches for WPI  include Evan Holmes and Mark Dion while the captains were seniors Brandon Finzel (Northport, NY) and David Zuniga (Cromwell, CT).

Tim Lyons of Babson highlighted the NEWMAC honor by being named Player of Year.  Wheaton's Kyle Sye was the conference Rookie of the Year while Coast's Guard's Chris Parsons was selected Coach of the Year.
