Worcester St. 5, WPI 1 - Worcester City Classic
Worcester, MA --- Tournament MVP Brian Andrade (Hudson, MA) tallied a hat trick and Constantno Partramanis (Worcester, MA) added two goals to help propel visiting Worcester State to an impressive 5-1 victory over WPI in Worcester City Men's Soccer Classic contest.
Later in the afternoon Worcester State won the tournament after Clark defeated Anna Maria 2-0. Both teams finished with identical 1-0-1 records with the Lancers earning the crown based on a better goal differential (+4 to +2).
Andrade opened the scoring for the Lancers in the 32nd minute with an unassisted goal. Worcester State added to the advantage just before the half when Partramanis converted a penalty kick with just 80 seconds left before intermission.
The opening seven minutes of the second stanza brought a flurry of goals. Andrade knocked home a feed from Laurence Moreno (Brimfield, MA) in the 49th minute before Partramanis scored off an assist from Andrew Babineau (Webster, MA) just 41 seconds later. Tommy Zajac (Merrimack, NH) got WPI onto the board with an unassisted tally in the 52nd minute.
Andrade completed his hat trick in the 72nd minute when he took a pass from Partramanis and tucked it past the WPI netminder. Andrade had also notched the tying goal in the Lancers 1-1 double overtime tie Friday night with Clark.
Daniel Hansen (Worcester, MA) played the first 80 minutes in net for Worcester State (1-0-1), collecting two saves. Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) worked the final 10 minutes without being called onto to make a stop. Goalkeeper Kirk Dragsbaek (Sherborn, CT) collected a pair of saves for WPI.
WPI is off until Wednesday September 10th, when they entertain Wentworth at 7pm. Worcester State ventures to New York state next weekend when they play at Union on Friday followed by Rensselaer on Saturday.
Clark 2, Anna Maria 0 - Worcester City Classic
Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Baran Doenmez (Dublin, NH) paced Clark University with a pair of goals to help lead the Cougars to a 2-0 victory over Anna Maria in the second day of the Worcester City Classic on Sunday afternoon at WPI's Alumni Field.
With Worcester State's 5-1 victory over WPI earlier today, the Cougars end the tournament as the runner-ups after both Clark and WSC finished with identical 1-0-1 records. The Lancers earned the tournament championship based on a better goal differential (+4 to +2).
Freshman Adrian Blackadar (Warwick, RI) came close to putting Clark on the board midway through the first stanza, but his shot hit the right post. Doenmez then broke the scoreless tie on a cross from sophomore Greg Jancarick (Swansea, MA) in the 28th minute.
Doenmez gave Clark some insurance in the 47th minute when he took buried a feed from senior Mike Trobagis (Acton, MA) into the back of the net. Doenmez has all three of Clark's goals this season as he also netted a tally in Friday's 1-1 double overtime tie with Worcester State.
Clark netminder Peter Wise (Providence, RI) made one save en route to posting his first shutout of the season. Anna Maria goalie Scott Burokas (Auburn, MA) was outstanding between the pipes as he tallied 10 stops for the AMCATS (0-2). Clark enjoyed a 17-2 edge in shots on the day and a 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cougars will play again on Wednesday when they entertain Johnson and Wales at 6pm at Granger Field while Anna Maria travels to Leicester to take on Becker on Thursday at 4pm.
