Gilde Earns Third Consecutive All-NEWMAC Men's Soccer Honor

Ben Gilde

Babson Park, MA --- WPI men's soccer midfielder Ben Gilde has been selected to the All-NEWMAC second team based on voting by conference coaches on Tuesday. Gilde has now earned the distinction of being named all-conference for the third straight year.

Gilde, who hails from Manchester, NH, wrapped up his standout four-year career in grand fashion.  The senior led WPI with six goals and 14 points.  For his career, Gilde notched 22 goals and 10 assists en route to registering 54 points.  This fall the Engineers finished 8-8-1 and fell 1-0 in the NEWMAC quarterfinals to second-seeded MIT, a team that earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Perhaps even more impressive are the accolades he has earned off the field.  Just recently, Gilde was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA) for the third consecutive year.  He'll find out later this week if he is an All-American after earning third team honors in 2006 and second team accolades a year ago

Additionally, the Men's Soccer team captured the Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the men's soccer student-athletes of the NEWMAC. It marks the second time that head coach Malcolm Macpherson's squad has took home the award. Assistant coaches for WPI include Evan Holmes, Mark Dion and Steve Groccia while the captains were Jonathan Zwirko (Holyoke, MA), Tom Zajac (Merrimack, NH) and Gilde.
