Worcester, MA --- WPI Associate Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Ann McCarron announced today the hiring of Meredith Merchant as the Assistant Recreation Director/Facility Coordinator.  The appointment of Merchant comes as WPI prepares to open a new $56 million Sports and Recreation Center this summer.

“We are pleased to have Meredith join the PERA Department,” commented McCarron. “She has a strong background in campus recreation and facility management, which will serve WPI well with the upcoming opening of the new, state-of-the-art Sports and Recreation Center.  She brings an energetic approach to this new position, and we look forward to incorporating her into the team.”

Merchant, who had been serving as a member services coordinator at Super Future Fitness in North Windham, CT, comes to WPI after an extensive background at Springfield College.  While at Springfield, Merchant was responsible for facility operations at its new 250,000 square foot facility.  She assisted in scheduling, training, supervising and evaluating 60 student employees.  In addition to her role as Graduate Associate of Facilities and Special Events in Campus Recreation, Merchant served as a Health and Fitness Intern at Springfield.

Merchant holds a bachelor’s degree in sport and leisure management from Eastern Connecticut and earned her masters of education in exercise science from Springfield.

“I am very excited to be part of a new tradition with the new Recreation Center here at WPI, stated Merchant. “I am thrilled to work and learn from Ann McCarron, the PERA staff, and surrounding departments as we tackle this monumental task as a team to bring a whole new light to the WPI community.”

Active in National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA), Merchant sat as the Massachusetts state student representative within the organization until her graduation from Springfield.  She presented at the regional conference in November 2010 and was the Region I scholarship winner in Spring of 2011.
