WPI Softball Starts Season 2-0

Cape Coral, FL --- Sophomore center fielder Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) rocked a home run to right center field in the third inning to give WPI a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Alfred in game one of spring break action.  The Engineers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-2 win over Rensselaer later in the afternoon.

Senior pitcher Meghan Kelly (Burlington, MA) pitched a brilliant game the for the Engineers in the opener  She tossed seven scoreless innings, giving up just two hits while fanning five.

Freshman third baseman Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) and Kelly collected one hit apiece in the victory.

In the nightcap, WPI went ahead in the first inning when Maglione was sent home on a series of walks from RPI after getting on base with a single to left center.  RPI tied the game in the fourth inning on a solo home run before the Crimson and Gray scored two runs on three hits in the fifth inning for a 3-1 lead.

Junior Briana Dougherty (Woburn, MA) started off the inning with a single to left center before Kristen Gervais (Millbury, MA) doubled to right.  With runners on second and third, Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) poked a single down the right field line to plate Dougherty and send Gervais to third.  Gervais would later score on a wild pitch to give the Engineers their third run of the game.

Rensselaer pulled to within one with a solo home run to right center in the sixth and threatened when they got the tying run on in the seventh but could not plate a third run.

WPI pitcher Jennifer Parker (Rochester, MA) allowed two hits and one run in four innings of work while Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) would allow one run in two innings of relief in picking up her first collegiate victory.  Kelly came on in the seventh to close the game for the Engineers as she struck out the side to preserve the win.
