WPI Loses to Dubuque (IA) 3-4 and then Bounces Back to 5-2 Beat Elizabethtown (PA)

Cape Coral, FL --- Nine different players recorded hits to lead WPI to a 5-2 win over Elizabethtown (PA) in spring break action. Kristen Gervais (Millbury, MA) and Amanda Matori (Haverhill, MA) paced the offensive attack with two hits apiece while Shannon O'Connell (Worcester, MA) registered two runs batted in for the Engineers.
With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth, Gervais singled up the middle following a Briana Dougherty (Woburn, MA) single to left center to put runners on first and second with no outs. After Jen Richards (Hampstead, NH) reached on a fielder's choice, Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) sent a rocket down the right field line to score Dougherty and set the score at 3-2, WPI. Back-to-back hits by O'Connell and Kristen Hodel (Buckley, WA) would extend the Engineer lead to 5-2.
Pitchers Jennifer Parker (Rochester, MA) and Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) combined for the win, allowing just two runs in seven innings of work. Parker upped he record to 1-1 on the season.
Earlier in the day WPI dropped a tough, extra-inning decision to Dubuque (IA). Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) had an outstanding game for the Crimson and Gray, leading off the game with a dinger to left center field to put WPI on the board, 1-0. She would strike again in the third inning with another homer to left field to give the Engineers a 2-0 advantage. Dubuque would come roaring back in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at 2-2 and the score would remain the same until the top of the ninth inning.
With Gervais on second to begin the ninth, Meghan Kelly (Burlington, MA) poked a single to right center to bring Gervais home and take the lead, 3-2. WPI failed to score again in the inning leaving the bases full to end the inning. Dubuque would take the game 4-3 in the bottom of the inning on a two run home run down the left field line.
Kelly took the loss for the Engineers allowing six hits and four runs while striking out seven in eight-plus innings of work.
