Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Sara Migdal (Hagaman, NY) collected five RBI, including a game-ending grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning, as WPI defeated visiting Fitchburg State 13-5 in non-conference softball action on Monday afternoon.  The Engineers are now 9-6 on the season while FSC dips to 7-11 overall.

WPI scored multiple runs in three innings of Monday's contest.  In the bottom of the first, the Crimson and Gray plated three runs, highlighted by a run-producing single from Kristin Gervais (Oxford, MA) and a Shannon O'Connell (Worcester, MA) RBI groundout.

Fitchburg State, who was able to muster just a single off starter Meghan Kelly (Burlington, MA), broke into the scoring column in the top of the fourth when Jess Morse (Milford, MA) greeted reliever Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) with her first career homer.  WPI responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame, including Nicole Maglione's (Charlton, MA) eighth home run of the season.  The sophomore centerfielder has five round trippers in her last five contests.

The Falcons would not go quietly, tallying four runs in the top of the fifth.   Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, MA) started the rally with a two-run double.  Morse added an RBI groundout before Keri Kravetz (West Bridgewater, MA) registered a RBI single.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Engineers loaded the bases to open the inning setting the stage for Migdal's mercy rule-evoking grand slam to right center.

Johnson (3-1 ) picked up the win for WPI, tossing the last three innings.  Michelle Yuille (Acushnet, MA), who was victimized by six unearned runs, dropped to 3-8 on the year for the Falcons.

Both teams are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at 4pm.  WPI will travel to Becker while Fitchburg State entertains Plymouth State in a doubleheader.
