WPI Softball Drops a 2-3 Decision to Amherst

Worcester, MA --- Liz Neckes' () seventh-inning single helped Amherst defeat WPI 3-2 in non-conference softball action on Monday afternoon. The Lord Jeffs are now 7-11 while WPI dips to 12-8.
Pinch hitter Anne Kelly (Littleton, CO) got things started for Amherst in the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. Alexa Princi (London, England) pinch ran for Kelly and advanced to second when Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) reached on a two-out infield single, setting the stage for Neckes heroics.
After Amherst chalked up a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead, WPI got one back in the bottom half of the frame, also in unearned fashion. The Engineers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth on yet another unearned run when Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) singled to center to drive in Briana Dougherty (Woburn, MA).
Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) started on the mound for the Jeffs, allowing one unearned run on four hits in three innings of work. Sam Miller (Newton, MA) started the fourth inning and was just as impressive, allowing two hits and one unearned run in four innings of relief. Miller (2-3) and Chang-Graham each picked up a pair of strikeouts.
Meghan Kelly (Burlington, MA) (6-2) picked up the complete-game loss for WPI, surrendering seven hits while striking out six and walking three.
First-year Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) was the only Amherst player to pick up multiple hits, as the rookie continued her hot streak with a 2-for-4 performance. Dougherty and Jen Richards (Hampstead, NH) each had a pair of hits for the Engineers.
