Dudley, MA --- The Nichols College softball team were swept away by WPI on Wednesday afternoon, losing 8-4 and 9-2 in the doubleheader match-up. With the sweep, Nichols slips to 10-8 overall on the season. The pair of victories improve WPI's record to 14-8 overall on the year. WPI pitchers silenced the Bison bats during game two, while the Engineers muscled up winning game one by the long ball.

Junior Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) led the Engineers to victory during game one as she tallied four RBI on two homeruns. The Bison charged back within one run, 5-4, when junior Tracy Cullity (Manchester, NH) doubled in a pair of Nichols base-runners and later scoring on a base hit by senior Jennifer Dudney (Ashland, MA) in the bottom of the fifth inning. WPI responded with three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth that increased its lead to 8-4. Nichols had its first two batters reach base in the bottom of the sixth only to be stranded as WPI senior pitcher Meghan Kelly (Burlington, MA) shutdown the final six batters she faced including four strikeouts.

During game two, the Engineers hit the Bison ace junior Lauren Person (Vernon, CT) often as they placed the ball into open space. Junior Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) silenced the Bison bats scattering four hits, fanning five, and allowing two runs on a homerun by junior Joanne Brignoli (Feeding Hills, MA). Junior Jenna Peters (Manville, RI) tallied three hits in three at bats to lead the Nichols hitters. WPI sophomore Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) and junior Briana Dougherty (Woburn, MA) combined for five hits, three runs and three RBI. Freshman Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) tallied a pair of hits and scored three Engineer runs in the 9-2 victory.

Nichols looks to rebound on Saturday, April 14th when it visits Curry College for a doubleheader. Curry's first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 pm.
