Worcester, MA --- With her team needing a sweep to qualify for next weekend's NEWMAC Tournament, junior pitcher Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) responded with a no-hitter and a three-hit shutout as visiting Wellesley defeated WPI, 4-0 and 6-0, in softball action on Saturday afternoon. WPI sees its season come to an end with a 16-14 overall record and 8-8 in conference play while Wellesley grabs the sixth and final tournament bid with a 18-12 record and an identical 8-8 mark in the NEWCAC.
Harvey was virtually unhittable in the opener. She recorded the first 17 outs by strikeout en route to notching 19 in the game. Harvey walked just two batters and hit a pair but did not allow a runner to reach second base until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Blue struck for unearned runs in the third and the fifth with RBI singles from Kara Wong (Milford, MA) and Alex Warren (Delta, BC) respectively. They would add a pair in the seven when Wong laced a run-producing double and Harvey helped her own cause with an RBI single. The duo were the only players to record multiple hits in the contest.
It was more of the same in the nightcap as Harvey carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. She collected 13 strikeouts while improving to 12-4 on the season. For the day, Harvey tossed 14 innings. She totaled 32 strikeouts, walked just five, and tossed an eye-popping 235 pitches.
Wellesley would get all the runs they would need in the top of first when Harvey's single up the middle would plate Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL). Warren would add to the lead in the third when she launched her second home run of the season to left field with one out. The Blue would tack on four unearned runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Alex Houghtalin (Haperwoods, MI) and yet another RBI single from Harvey.
WPI senior Meghan Kelly (Burlington, MA) was strong while logging a pair of complete games for the Engineers. She allowed just two earned runs in both contests and recorded a total of 10 strikeouts on the day. Kelly (7-7) ends her standout career as WPI all-time leader in wins (39), ERA (1.45) and strikeouts (427).
Senior Kristen Gervais (Millbury, MA), junior Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) and sophomore Jen Richards (Hampstead, NH) accounted for the Engineers hits in game two.
The Blue will open up NEWMAC Tournament play on Wednesday. The sixth-seeded Blue will face two-time defending champion Babson in a first round contest at 3pm at Wheaton.
