Fort Myers, FL --- The WPI softball team took advantage of six Rockford (IL) errors and a strong pitching performance from senior Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) to tally a 4-2 win to kick off the 2008 campaign.  The victory marks the first win for George LeGacy who after eight years as an assistant coach, takes over as head coach for the Engineers.

Hassett threw seven innings, scattering seven hits while fanning eight to pick up her first win of the season.  Briana Dougherty (Woburn, MA), Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) and Sarah Johnson (Eastham, MA) all tallied singles while Johnson and senior Kristen Hodel (Buckley, WA) each knocked in one run for WPI.

In the nightcap, the Engineers dropped a 6-1 decision to Tri-State University.  Sophomore Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) scored WPI's only run of the game on a passed ball following a long triple to left field.  Catcher Sarah Migdal (Galway, NY) was 2-for-3 with a double and a single while Richards, Hodel, Kim Martilla (Kings Park, NY), Amanda Kent (Stoneham, MA) and Sam Wentzell (Tyngsboro, MA) all contributed hits for the Engineers.

Freshman Lindsay Brown (Westfield, NJ) took the loss in the circle, giving up ten hits while striking out five in six innings of work.

WPI softball is now 1-1 and will continue its spring break schedule on Monday when they take on St. Mary's (IN) and Dominican (IL).
