New London, CT -- Pitcher Crystal Lee Coonan (North Grafton, MA) tossed two complete games to lead the Coast Guard softball team to a NEWMAC doubleheader sweep (5-4 and 6-5) over WPI this afternoon. The games were played at Coast Guard with WPI as the home team due to unplayable field conditions in Worcester.
With the wins, the Bears lift their record to 7-11 overall, and 2-2 in the NEWMAC. The Crimson and Gray fall to 7-6 overall, and 0-2 in league play.
In game one, the Engineers took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning thanks to a trio of Coast Guard errors and RBI hits from Sarah Midgal (Galway, NY) and Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA). The Bears battled back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning and after holding WPI in the bottom of the frame, rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
Designated hitter Courtney Wolf (Fredericksburg, VA) had a stellar game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while first baseman Colleen Denny (Clarence City, NY) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Coonan picked up the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three in seven innings.
Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA), who absorbed the loss for the Engineers, falls to 3-3 on the season. The senior yielded five earned runs on ten hits while striking out four in seven innings. Foley and Jen Richards (Hampstead, NH) each poked a pair of hits while Migdal and Kim Martilla (Kings Park, NY) collected a hit and a RBI for the Crimson and Gray.
In the nightcap, the Bears took advantage of four WPI errors and another strong pitching performance from Coonan to walk away with a 6-5 win, and the sweep.
Senior Emily Paxson (Dunellen, NJ) was 1-for-3 with two RBI for Coast Guard while Leanna Minton (Antoich, CA), Erin Cullen (Dublin, OH), Laura Hutchinson (Waynesboro, VA) and Wolf all knocked in a run for the Bears.
Co-captain Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) went 3-for-4 with an RBI for WPI while shortstop Briana Dougherty (Woburn, MA) was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Martilla and Kristen Hodel (Buckley, WA) each recorded an RBI for the Crimson and Gray.
