Worcester, MA --- The WPI and Clark softball teams spilt a NEWMAC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The visiting Engineers took the opener 4-3 while the host Cougars won the nightcap 6-1. WPI is now 8-9 on the season and 1-3 in conference action while Clark is 12-6 overall and 4-2 in NEWMAC play.
WPI used the long ball and solid pitching to get the victory in game one. Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) gave the Crimson and Gray a 2-0 advantage just three batters into the game with a two-run homer. An inning later Kim Martilla (Kings Park, NY) blasted a home run before Jen Richards (Hampstead, NH) put the Engineers up 4-0 with a RBI single to left in the fourth inning.
Clark pushed across a run in the fourth on a wild pitch before Darcy Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, CA) and Joanna Clark (Windham, ME) strung together back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth to slice the lead to 4-3. From that point, WPI pitcher Lindsay Brown (Westfield, NJ) retired seven of the last eight Cougar batters to secure the win. The first-year hurler went the distance to improve to 5-4 on the season.
In game two, Clark got outstanding offensive production from its middle infielders. Second baseman Lauren Blake (Oakland, ME) and shortstop Heather Warren (Upland, CA) each went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Cougars rallied from an early 1-0 deficit with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning. Joanna Clark chipped in with an RBI single in the fifth before the Cougars blew the game open with a three-run sixth inning highlighted by a Katherine Tutela (Dalton, MA) run-producing single to left field.
Sarah Carter (Worcester, MA) upped her record to 5-2 by scattering seven hits while going the distance. Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) absorbed the loss for WPI despite allowing just two earned runs. Martilla brought home the Engineers lone run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Both teams return to action on Friday with NEWMAC doubleheaders. WPI will host MIT while Clark will venture to New London, CT to take on Coast Guard.
