Softball Splits Third Straight NEWMAC Doubleheader

Worcester, MA --- Kim Martilla (Kings Park, NY) and Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) each registered a triple and a double and Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) smashed her fifth homerun of the season to lead WPI to a 10-3 win in the opener of a NEWMAC doubleheader versus MIT on Sunday afternoon. MIT rebounded to take the second game of the twinbill and improve to 4-13 (1-5 NEWMAC) on the season. WPI falls to 10-11 and 3-5 in league play.
The Crimson and Gray took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Maglione came around to score on a wild pitch from MIT pitcher Jessica Oleinik (Ellicott City, MD). WPI added another run in the third before erupting for a five-run fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The inning featured five hits including a homer over the right field fence from Maglione and a triple from DeCampo.
Oleinik and Lily Keung (Boston, MA) each finished with two hits apiece for MIT while Holly Jeffrey (Wheaton, IL) belted a three-run double.
Freshman pitcher Lindsay Brown (Westfield, NJ) picked up her third NEWMAC win of the week and upped her record to 7-4 on the season. In seven innings, she allowed just three runs on ten hits while striking out a career-best ten.
Martilla was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for WPI while Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) recorded two hits while scoring two runs. First baseman Sarah Johnson (Eastham, MA) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In game two, the visitors used a pair of three-run innings and a six-run sixth to earn a 12-7 win and help MIT salvage a split. Freshman Keri Dixon (Bethlehem, PA) highlighted the sixth inning attack, lacing her second double of the game, to bring in three runs.
Pitcher Leah Bogsted (Levittown, NY) tossed a solid game for MIT, yielding seven runs on nine hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work. Bogsted helped her cause at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 to knock in two RBI. Cheryl Kwinn (Monroe, NY) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Designated hitter Sara Migdal (Galway, NY) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored for WPI while Maglione, Richards and Johnson each recorded a pair of hits for the hosts.
Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) took the loss on the mound, falling to 3-7 on the season despite fanning nine.
WPI softball returns to the diamond on Tuesday when they host Nichols in a doubleheader beginning at 3pm. MIT will host Coast Guard in a NEWMAC twinbill on Monday at 3pm.
