Fitchburg, MA --- Fitchburg State plated a single run in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead that pitcher Bethany Stone (Wells, ME) helped seal the Falcons' 5-4 victory over visiting WPI in non-conference softball action Monday afternoon at Withington Field at Coolidge Park.

Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, MA) (4-for-4, RBI) and Eryne Cotter (North Easton, MA) (3-for-3) helped pace the Falcons to a 7-16 overall record while the Engineers received a two-run home run from Briana Dougherty (Woburn, MA) but still dropped to 12-16 overall.

WPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Dougherty's two-run blast over the centerfield fence. Trzcinski scored later in the frame on a wild pitch.

The Engineers quickly regained the lead at 4-2 in the fourth on a scorching two-run line drive up the middle off the bat of Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA). Again, the Falcons retaliated and the tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning after Cotter scored on a wild pitch and Trzcinski delivered an RBI single.

Fitchburg State took its first lead in the fifth inning on a Meghan Feeley (Bridgewater, MA) fielder's choice that made the score 5-4. Stone went the distance to earn the victory, allowing four runs (2 earned) on seven hits to go along with three strikeouts. Lindsay Brown (Westfield, NJ) was the tough-luck loser after allowing five runs (3 earned) on 11 hits with a strikeout.

Fitchburg State returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Worcester State for a doubleheader at 5:00pm. WPI returns to action on Wednesday, when they host Worcester State for a doubleheader at 3:30pm.
