Worcester, MA --- Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) tossed 12 of Smith's 14 shutout innings to help the Pioneers sweep host WPI by scores of 1-0 and 5-0 in NEWMAC softball action on Friday afternoon.  With the sweep, Smith (12-18, 5-9) moves into a tie with Coast Guard for the sixth and final spot for next week's NEWMAC Tournament.  The Pioneers host Coast Guard in a doubleheader on Saturday.

In the opener, Smith registered the only run of the game just two pitches into the contest when Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL) belted her fifth home run of the season over the center field fence.  Hiltzik took over from there, limiting the WPI offense to just five hits while only allowing a just single walk.

WPI senior pitcher Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) was brilliant as well, scattering seven hits while striking out four.  Smith's Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) was the game's only repeat hitter while Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) tallied a single and a stolen base for the Engineers.

Game two was scoreless through the first three frames before Smith broke through for a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning and three more tallies in the fifth.   Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) got the Pioneers on the board with an RBI single in the fourth.  An inning later Kathryn Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) delivered a run-scoring double before Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) notched a two-run single.

Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) and Hiltzik combined on a one-hitter for Smith with Fisher throwing the first two innings and Hiltzik hurling the last five to pick up the win.

Lindsay Brown (Westfield, NJ) was the hard-luck loser for WPI, yielding just two earned runs in while throwing all seven innings.  Catcher Sara Migdal (Hagaman, NY) picked up the only hit for the Engineers, dumping a single into right center in the bottom of the fifth.

With the sweep, WPI drops to 14-18 overall and 3-9 in NEWMAC play.  The Engineers, who were eliminated from the NEWMAC Tournament contention, will close out their 2008 campaign on Saturday with a doubleheader at first place Wellesley.
