Softball Loses Heartbreaker in NEWMAC Softball Tournament to Coast Guard

New London, CT --- Senior Jeannie Crump (Roseville, CA) hit a walk off three-run homer to left centerfield in the bottom of the eighth as top-seeded Coast Guard remained alive beating sixth-seeded WPI 3-1 in Game #6 of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament.

Coast Guard will now play fifth-seeded Babson at 4:00 in another elimination game.   WPI, who is eliminated from tournament play, closes out the season with a doubleheader at home on Monday versus MCLA.

Junior Meg Foley's (Belchertown, MA) RBI single scored pinch runner Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) in the top of the eighth inning.

In the home half, sophomore Anna Funk (Galax, VA) was placed on second as part of the tie breaker. Following a pop out, senior Annette Boston (Oceanside, CA) reached on a bunt single before Crump's game winner.

WPI freshman Allie Hardy (Townsend, MA) and Coast Guard freshman Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, LA) hooked up in a pitchers duel.

Each team had just one hit through the first five innings. WPI senior Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) led off the game with a single while junior Courtney Wolf (Fredericksburg, VA) had an infield single in the fourth for the Bears. Feindel struck out 11 over the first five innings while Hardy fanned five in the first five frames. 

Coast Guard threaten in the bottom of the sixth as senior Annette Boston bunted for a hit and stole second. Crump followed with a single to left and went to second on throw giving the Bears second and third with one out. Hardy got sophomore Amanda Frederick (Lebanon, OH) to hit a comebacker which turned into a double play as Frederick was retired at first and Boston was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. 

Feindel allowed just four hits, an unearned run and struck out a career-high 15 to improve to 28-2 on the season.

Hardy (10-7) allowed six hits, two earned runs and struck out five in taking the loss.
