Maglione, Richards, Foley and Johnson Named Softball Academic All-NEWMAC

Babson Park, MA ---  The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2008 Softball Academic All-Conference Team on Wednesday.  WPI placed four student-athletes on the team this year, third most in the nine-team conference behind MIT (5) and Springfield (6).

Seniors Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA), Jennifer Richards (Hampstead, NH), junior Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) and junior Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) were the WPI student-athletes honored for this year's academic achievement. The honor is the third straight for Maglione, while Richards and Foley take home their second straight all-academic awards. Johnson was named to the team for the first time.

The Engineers closed up the season with an overall record of 16-23 and a NEWMAC league record of 6-10.  The team improved by two wins overall and by three wins in the conference under head coach George Legacy this season.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2008 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season. 

The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 10 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
