Senior OF Nicole Maglione Named Co-SIDA Academic All-District I

Nicole Maglione
Worcester, MA --- WPI softball outfielder Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA).
Maglione, who now advances to the national ballot, is one of four outfielders who were selected to the first team in the College Division, which is comprised of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA programs in New England, New York and Eastern Canada.
Maglione sports a 3.85 GPA while majoring in civil
engineering. During each of the last three years at WPI, she
has been honored with a major award at the department's annual
banquet. The awards include the Carolyn McCabe Award
presented to the sophomore who best exemplifies the high standards
expressed in “The WPI Athlete", the Poly Club Award,
presented to the top junior female athlete who has outstanding
academic records along with campus involvement of a non-athletic
nature, and the Varsity Club Award, presented to the senior athlete
on her achievements, contributions, character, leadership,
sportsmanship and promotion of school spirit during her four years
at WPI. Maglione also earned the Charles O. Thompson
scholarship for outstanding academic success at WPI as a freshman,
was a three-time Academic All-NEWMAC selection and was named NEWMAC
Rookie of the Year in 2006.
This season, Maglione led the Engineers in runs scored, walks and
triples. She batted .351 for the year, with two home runs, 11
RBI and 28 runs scored. The Engineers, under the leadership of
second-year head coach George Legacy, finished the season 16-23, a
four-win improvement from a year ago.
Senior catcher/designated player Jennifer Richards (Hampstead, NH) was also selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I first team, the first time that WPI has had two players named to the first team in the same season.
