WPI Women's Swimming and Diving Finishes 10th at NEWMAC Championships

Wellesley MA --- Freshman diver Morgan Guardino (Manchester, CT) became the first WPI Women's Swimming and Diving athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships when she tallied 411 points in the 1 meter event during the first day of action at the NEWMAC Championships on Friday.   For the meet, the Engineers finished in tenth place with 119 points, just 21 points out of eight place.

Guardino, who broke her own school record with her 11 dive performance, moved from eighth place to seventh on her last dive.  She followed that performance with a seventh place finish in the 3 meter event with 404.85 points on Sunday. 

Also on Friday, The Engineers boasted several strong performances including a seventh place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  The team of Danielle Sorenson (Reno, NV), Chelsea Bierkan (Allison Park, PA), Amanda Jenkins (Columbia, CT), Hallie Schiess (Wilmont, CT) logged a time of 1:46.94. 

The Crimson and Gray also placed 16th in the event when the combination of Therese Comeau (Goffstown, NH), Allison Elder (North Adams, MA), Rachel Buteau (Cherry Valley, MA), Jodi Lowell (Ledyard, CT) finished in a time of 1:53.19. The 400-yard medley relay team of Katie Kelly (Garrison, NY), Elder, Julie Buffam (Westfield, MA) and Buteau swam to a tenth place finish in a time of 4:42.08. 

In day two of swimming action, the 800-yard freestyle relay team comprised of Jenkins, Lowell, Schiess, and Bierkan swam to an eighth place finish with their time of 8:33.19 while Kelly grabbed thirteenth place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.93). 

On Sunday, Kelly finished 16th overall in the 200-yard backstroke (2:24.19) and Jenkins earned the same placing in the 1650-yard freestyle (19:38.80).
