Three Records Fall as Women's Swimming Has Great First Day at NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Women's Swimming and Diving set three new school records to kick off the NEWMAC Championships with a bang this evening at MIT. After five events, the Engineers are currently in 7th place overall with 82 points, just nine points out of fifth.
The 400 yard medley squad of Toni LaBella (Warrick, RI), Amanda Blom (Wilkes Barre, PA), Karen O'Sullivan (Pelham, NH) and Amanda Jenkins (Columbia, CT) posted a time of 4:07.14 to shatter the old school record by 14 seconds while the WPI B team consisting of Lauren Anderson (Bedford, MA), Therese Comeau (Goffstown, NH), Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA) and Samantha Brown (Dunbarton, NH) all swam personal bests to touch the wall in 4:28.31 to finish 16th overall. This marks the first time that two WPI teams have scored in the 400 yard medley event.
O'Sullivan picked up WPI's top individual spot on the evening en route to setting a new school record with her fourth place finish (2:14.16) in the 200 yard IM. Toni LaBella (Warrick, RI) was 25th overall to finish behind O'Sullivan. Aubin also swam a great race to take home the 16th spot in the 50 yard freestyle (25.55) while teammate Kaitlyn Kelley (Salt Lake City, UT) registered a time of 25.77 to place 20th in the preliminaries. Morgan Guardino (Manchester, CT) tallied 382.55 points to dive to seventh place in the one meter event.
The 200 freestyle team of Jess Shelsky (Nashua, NH), O'Sullivan, Kelley and Aubin shaved nearly six seconds off of their morning swim to place seventh (1:23.2) and set a school record in the event while the WPI B combination of Jenkins, Aubin, Kelsey Thomas (Webster, NY) and Blom found themselves in 19th place (1:50.8).
The championships will resume tomorrow morning with the preliminaries beginning at 11:30am followed by the finals to be swum at 6:30pm.
