Women's Swimming Strong Again at NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Women's Swimming and Diving wrapped up competition at the three-day NEWMAC Championships this evening. The Engineers saw several amazing performances throughout the meet at MIT to finish in eighth place overall with 202.5 points. The team's eighth place spot marks WPI's top finish ever at the NEWMAC's and was just 4.5 points out of seventh. Springfield was the league champion with 872.5 points.
Karen O'Sullivan (Pelham, NH) led the WPI effort with her 7th place (2:34.7) finish in the 200 yard breaststroke. O'Sullivan improved upon her old school record of 2:34.58 set in 2006 with a 2:32.93 mark in the 200 breaststroke's preliminary race. Amanda Blom (Wilkes Barre, PA) finished behind O'Sullivan in 22nd (2:46.3).
Freshman Toni LaBella (Warrick, RI) closed out a solid performance with 13th place (2:20.59) in the 200 yard backstroke with teammate Lauren Anderson placing 28th (2:27.9). Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA) and Kaitlyn Kelley (Salt Lake City, UT) each broke the old school record of 57.04, set in 2004 by Laura Desi, in the preliminary race of the 100 yard freestyle. Aubin registered a time of 55.23 while Kelley finished in 56.53. Aubin went on to take home 14th place while Kelley placed 21st.
Colleen Heckley (Tyngsboro, MA) placed 23rd (20:06.6) in the 1650 yard freestyle while Rachael Weinrick (Logan Township, NJ) followed in 26th (20:36.3). Morgan Guardino (Manchester, CT) tallied 358 points in the three meter event which was good enough for ninth place.
The 400 yard freestyle relay squad of Kelley, Jess Shelsky (Nashua, NH), O'Sullivan and Aubin combined to place ninth (3:45.9) and set another WPI school record while LaBella, Kelsey Thomas (Webster, NY), Wienrick and Amanda Jenkins (Columbia, CT) were 17th (3:59.5).
Women's Swimming and Diving will be competing at next weekend's ECAC Championships.
