WORCESTER -- Swimmer Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) and diver Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) were double individual event winners and Bauer, Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) were part of all four winning relays as WPI concluded its home schedule Saturday by hosting the Tech Sprints.
Bauer earned gold in the 100-yard backstroke (50.23) and the 25-yard backstroke (11.54) while placing second (23.27) behind Perry in the 50-yard butterfly (23.16). Melanson amassed 490.42 points in winning the 1-meter diving and totaled 454.05 while taking the 3-meter event. Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) also won for the Crimson and Gray, touching the wall in a time of 26.25 in the 50-yard breaststroke.
The Engineers really flexed their muscles in the relays, sweeping the four events. The 100-yard medly foursome of Bauer, Chen, Perry and Burgwardt posted a time of 43.15 while the same group captured the 200-yard medley in a time of 1:32.71. Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt/) joined the trio of Bauer, Perry and Burgwardt to claim first in the 100-yard (38.94) and 200-yard (1:25.84) freestyle relays.
Select athletes are back in action next Saturday at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Clark. Action begins at 1pm.
