Women's Track and Field Falls a Point Short of the City Title

Worcester, MA --- Paced by double-winners Lauren King (Stoughton, MA) and Molly O'Connell (Sandy State, UT), the Assumption women's track captured the 2008 Worcester City Outdoor Meet held this weekend at WPI. The Greyhounds (66) defeated host WPI (65) by a single point while Worcester State claimed third place with 36 points.
The meet marked the first track event held at the renamed and remodeled Merl Norcross Track, named in honor of the former legendary WPI track coach.
King took home first place in the 100 meters (13.67) and 200 meters (28.53) while O'Connell brought home titles in the shot put (34-7.50) and discus (113-1). Other Assumption winners included Rosie Lotocky (Stamford, CT) in the hammer throw (99-9) and Trisha Domings (Lexington, MA) in the long jump (15-2.75). The Greyhounds also took first in the 4x100 relay (54.36).
WPI also posted a pair of double-winners as Stacy Rudolf (Somers, CT) picked up victories in the high jump (4-8) and 100 meter hurdles (18.14) while teammate Megan Murphy (Perkasie, PA) ran to first place in the 1500 meters (5:03.50) and 800 meters (2:27.35). Sophomore Liz Schreiber (Ashfield, MA) had quite a day for herself as she took home the top prize in the 400 meter run (1:04.59) before finishing second in the hammer throw (99-1). In addition, Schreiber ran on the first place 4x400 meter relay team (4:34.37) and combined with her teammates to place second in the 4x100 relay (56.12). Beth Hegarty (Springfield, MA) was the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000 meters (20:52.37).
Worcester State saw three athletes claim first place finishes including Racheal Armenti (West Boylston, MA) in the javelin (71-10), Andrea Oullette (Amesbury, MA) in the triple jump (33-8.75) and Becky Kniss (Little Rock, AK) in the 400 meter hurdles (1:24.21).
WPI will venture to Cambridge next Saturday to compete against MIT and RPI for the Engineers Cup.
