Arredondo Becomes First Men's Track and Field All-American Since 2000

Jarrett Arredondo

Worcester, MA --- Jarrett Arredondo (Somerville, MA) earned All-America accolades by finishing seventh in the hammer throw on Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Marietta (OH).  The junior registered a toss of 179-11 to become the first WPI men's track and field All-American since James Hammond finished eighth in the hammer throw at the 2000 championships.

Arredondo dodged foul trouble throughout the event to earn the honor.  His second heave ended up being his longest as he fouled on his first, third and fifth attempts.  Arredondo, who placed 11th a year ago, was the second highest finisher from New England.  Keene State sophomore Bryan Kolacz took home the title with a Division III season-best distance and stadium record throw of 201-8.  Arredondo, who won the hammer and the shot at last month's NEWMAC championship had also qualified provisionally for the NCAA's this past winter in the weight throw.

Later in the day, Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) capped a fine sophomore season by placing 12th in the javelin.  He tallied a throw of 184-4 in the preliminary rounds, narrowly missing the finals.  Baker, the NEWMAC and New England Division III champion, finished seven spots higher and 31 feet farther than his 19th place finish a year ago.

The performances marked the end of a very successful track and field campaign for the Engineers.  Under first year head coach Brian Chabot, the New England regional Coach of the Year, the Crimson and Gray won the Worcester City Meet and the Eric Losncher Memorial Meet hosted by Fitchburg State.  WPI then logged an impressive second place finished at the NEWMAC Championships before placing fourth, its best finish in 15 years, at the New England Division III Championships.  Assistant coaches include Mike Stomski, Vinny Kotowski, Miguel Concepcion and Mike Maceiko.
