WPI Track and Field Programs Earn Academic Accolades

New Orleans, LA --- The WPI Men's and Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams have earned 2008 NCAA Division III USTFCCCA honors as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association. The women's team posted an impressive 3.44 grade point average which was tied for 16th while the men's cumulative average was 3.30 and eighth overall nationally.
Additionally a pair of Engineer student-athletes were named to the Division III All-Academic Track and Field team. Sophomore Jarrett Arredondo (Somerville, MA) and freshman Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) compiled a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 and met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event. Arredondo finished 11th in the hammer throw at the outdoor championships while freshman Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) took home 17th in the javelin. The Haverford men's program had the highest overall grade point average (3.461) while the University of Wisconsin La-Crosse (3.018) and Whitworth (3.214) were named the Scholar Teams of the Year. UW La-Crosse was this year's 2008 Division III Indoor National Champions while Whitworth was third at the 2008 Outdoor Championship.
The Whitworth University Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field team had the highest overall team grade point averages (3.642) while Illinois Wesleyan University (3.40), the indoor and outdoor national champions, was named the Scholar Team of the Year.
The WPI program was led in 2007-2008 by Mike Maceiko, who recently stepped aside from the helm. Longtime assistant Brian Chabot has taken over the program while Maceiko will remain involved as a volunteer assistant.
There were 92 women's Division III women's track and field programs recognized while 56 men's teams were honored. From the NEWMAC, both of the men's and women's track and field programs from Babson and Wheaton Colleges were distinguished by the USTFCCCA.
