Arredondo, Throwers Lead Men's Track and Field to Win at Tartan Invitational

Northampton, MA --- Senior thrower Jarrett Arredondo (Somerville, MA) won both the weight throw and shot put, leading an impressive showing from the throwers in WPI Men's Track and Field's victory at the Tartan Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday. WPI recorded a meet-best 183.5 points en route to winning the Tartan Invitational for the third time in the last four years.
Arredondo eclipsed the field in the shot put with a throw of 14.01m and also won the weight throw with a throw of 16.54m. Arredondo's performance in the weight throw earned him a qualifier the New England championships, and led a host of WPI throwers who excelled at the event. The Engineers took six of the top 10 spots in the weight throw including Fran Collins' (Springfield, MA) second-place throw (16.07m) and Chris Farren's (Plaistow, NH) fourth-place showing (14.43m). The Crimson and Gray swept the shot put, taking the top three spots with Arredondo in first, junior Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) finishing second (13.77m) and Collins coming in third (13.58m).
WPI would win two other events on the day, including its win in the first event of the day, the distance medley relay (11:19.63), and Kyle Morette's (Leominster, MA) victory in the pole vault (4.40m).
Other top performances for WPI included Stephen Kocienski's (Schaghticoke, NY) second-place result in the 600-meter run (1:26.51), Dan Duffty's (Haverhill, MA) second-place showing in the 3000-meter run (8:59.76) and a pair of Engineer high jumpers, Steve Madamba (West Springfield, MA) and Nick Everett (Natick, MA) who finished tied for second (1.81m). The Engineers also featured success in the relay events. In addition to WPI's win in the distance medley relay, the Engineers placed third in both the 4x200-meter relay (1:34.71) and the 4x800-meter relay (8:30.19).
The Engineers' win at the Tartan Invitational caps a busy weekend for Men's Track and Field. On Friday, WPI competed at the Tufts Indoor Pentathlon, with Ben Roy (Buxton, ME) taking fourth place (3,148 pts) and Mike Thyden (Sutton, MA) seventh (2,918 pts).
Men's Indoor Track and Field will be back in action next weekend, competing at the MIT Invitational and the BU Valentine Invitational on Saturday February 13.
