Brian Chabot
New Orleans, LA --- For the second year in a row, the WPI Men's and Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field programs were recognized as 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field teams. The honors were announced recently by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The WPI women's team posted an impressive 3.37 grade point average during the past year, which was tied for 44th, while the men's cumulative average was 3.31 and 16th overall nationally.
Additionally, a pair of Engineer student-athletes were named to the Division III All-Academic Track and Field team. Junior Jarrett Arredondo (Somerville, MA) and sophomore Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) compiled a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25, and met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective events. Arredondo earned All-American status by placing seventh in the hammer throw at the outdoor championships, while Baker finished 12th in the javelin. The WPI duo were two of just 187 male student-athletes representing 78 Division III colleges and universities that comprised the 2009 All-Academic team.
Colorado College's men's program had the highest overall grade point average (3.460) while Whitworth (3.327) was named the Scholar Team of the Year. The Pirates were a program-best third at the Indoor Championships before a sixth place showing at the Outdoor Championships
Shenandoah's Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field team had the highest overall team grade point average (3.676) while Wartburg (3.227), the indoor and outdoor national champions, was named the Scholar Team of the Year.
The Engineers were led by first year head coach Brian Chabot. Chabot took home New England Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year honors after a second place finish at the NEWMAC Championships and a fourth place showing at the New England Championships. Chabot also oversaw a great improvement on the women's side, as the Crimson and Gray placed fifth at the NEWMAC Championships.
There were 100 women's Division III women's track and field programs honored while 51 men's teams were recognized by the USTFCCCA. Both the men's and women's track and field programs from fellow NEWMAC school Babson, MIT, Springfield and Wheaton were also honored.
