Fleury Helps Fuel Men's Track & Field's Second Consecutive Amherst Spring Fling Title

Amherst, MA --- Four individuals and two relays won their respective events as the WPI Men's Track and Field captured the team title Saturday at the Amherst Spring Fling.

The Engineers, ranked 31st in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings thanks to last Sunday's 10K, narrowly doubled up No. 18 Amherst by a count of 148-79. No. 20 Brandeis (42) was third, No. 1 Williams was fourth (37), and Plymouth State made its season debut with a fifth-place effort (34.5). No. 30 Conn College (33), No. 26 Wesleyan (17.5), No. 23 Trinity (17) and No. 3 Middlebury (16) rounded out the NCAA portion of the field. As in years past, Williams rested its top performers. Middlebury did the same.

Junior Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) cleared 6-2.25 in the high jump as freshman Billy Kopellas (Needham, MA) achieved a leap of 20-10.75. Freshman Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH) broke the tape in the 100-meter dash (11.07) as did senior Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) in the 400-meter hurdles (59.51).

The high jump saw junior Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) place second in the high jump (5-10.5) and long jump (20-9.75) as sophomore Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) also represented the Engineers in the long jump with a sixth-place 19-6.The 100 included senior Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) in second (11.16), senior Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) in fourth (11.23) and junior Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) in fifth (11.25). Freshmen Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) and Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) were 2-3 in the 400 hurdles with times of 1:00.44 and 1:00.64. They were followed by sophomore Zach Zolotarevsky (Easton, MA) in sixth (1:02.93).

Freshman Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH), sophomore Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH), junior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD), and senior Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) teamed up to take the 4x800-meter relay (8:03.17) while Fleury, freshman Alex Rus (Newton, MA), D'Amore and Whelan combined to win the 4x100-meter relay (43.17). Rus also placed second in the 200-meter dash (22.36) and fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.78). Staver posted a second-place 49.99 and junior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) was fifth (51.28) in the 400-meter dash while D'Amore was fourth (22.82) in the 200.

Freshman Mike Corace (Spotswood, NJ) tossed the javelin 168-04 to finish second. Scott was second in the 1,500-meter run (4:07.61) along with Gaziano in the 110-meter hurdles (16.17). Junior Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA), Hanlon and Schimmel were fourth (165-07), fifth (4:10.06) and sixth (16.85), in their respective events. Kopellas secured third in the triple jump (41-10.75) and freshman Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) led the Engineers in the shot put with a third-place 41-11.25. Junior Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) and senior Chad DellaPorta (Billerica, MA) trailed in fourth (41-5.75) and fifth (40-10.5).

Senior Kyle Morrison (York, ME) and sophomore Michael Brady (Medway, MA) were the third and fifth collegiate participants, and fourth and fifth overall, in the 5,000-meter run with times of 15:36.38 and 15:37.77. Junior Patrick Wang (Beijing, China) and Bennett also had a third and fifth-place effort in the discus with distances of 118-5 and 112-11.

The foursome of sophomore Thomas Mackintosh (Ellington, CT), Gaziano, Kelly and Schimmel placed fourth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:42.39). Senior Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) was also fourth as he threw the hammer 144 feet as Wang was fifth (138-7) and Bennett was sixth (133-1). Freshman Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) chipped in with a fifth-place 10:26.79 in the steeplechase.

WPI is back in action Friday at Coast Guard for a tri-meet that includes Springfield. Select student-athletes will be a short drive away at Conn College for the Elite Distance and Multi-Event meet.
