The 2008-2009 season will mark the first for Brian Chabot as head men's and women's track and field coach at WPI. Chabot takes over for Mike Maceiko after four years as an assistant coach.
"Brian has been a strong partner with Mike in the development of our men's and women's track and field program over the last few years," said WPI Athletic Director Dana Harmon. "We are looking forward to him providing the leadership and direction to our program for years to come."
Since his arrival at WPI, Chabot has helped 38 athletes earn All-New England honors and eight garner All-ECAC distinctions.
"I am privileged to be taking over the reigns of such a talented group of student-athletes," said Chabot. "During the last five years Coach Maceiko brought WPI Track and Field back to a high level of prominence not only in New England, but also the Northeast region and nationwide."
This past winter, three men took home All-New England and ECAC honors after placing in the top eight during the indoor season. This spring the men's team finished fourth at the NEWMAC Outdoor Championships, with three men capturing first place finishes.
Building on momentum from their performance at the NEWMAC's, the men finished eighth out of 26 teams in attendance at the All-New England meet, with nine taking home honorable distinctions. Just two weeks later, the men's team placed 18th out of 52 teams at ECAC's while four earned All-ECAC honors.
On the women's side this past spring, three women teammates were distinguished with All-New England accolades while one earned All-ECAC honors.
Prior to joining the staff at WPI, he coached indoor track and field at his alma mater, St. John's High School in Shrewsbury from 2000-01. Under Chabot's tutelage, the Pioneers set school records in the mile and the 4x800 relay.
In college, Chabot was a standout cross country and track and field athlete at UMass-Amherst. Chabot was a two-year team captain in both sports for the Minutemen and was All-New England in the 1000 meter run in 1997 (2:28.4) . He graduated from UMass in 1999 with a double-major in Psychology and History.
