Serena Dubois
WPI 63, Mount Holyoke 42
South Hadley MA --- Sophomore forward Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME) notched a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds to help the WPI women's basketball team to a 63-42 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium. With the win, the Engineers avenged last season's league championship game loss versus Mount Holyoke.
Three players reached double digits in the scoring column for WPI, which shot 45.0% (27-60) from the floor and outrebounded the hosts 40-31. Sophomore guard Kathleen Selen (Worcester, MA) tallied 12 points and four blocked shots, while first year guard Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) came off the bench to score a team-best 14 points. Fontaine made 5-of-9 shots from the field and knocked down all three of her team's three-pointers.
Mount Holyoke was limited to 31.3% (15-48) shooting from the field but converted all ten of its free-throw attempts. The Lyons were forced into 28 turnovers in the contest. Junior guard Katie Austen (Mount Sinai, NY) set the tone for the hosts, piling up a game-high 17 points to go with five rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks. Mount Holyoke also received a spark from senior forward Marisa Barone (Ludlow, MA), who added nine points and six boards.
The first half featured three ties and six lead changes. A conventional three-point play by Barone put Mount Holyoke in front 17-15 midway through the opening frame, but WPI scored the next eight points to open up a six point edge (23-17) at the 5:21 mark. The Engineers closed out the half with a 17-4 run to open up a 32-21 advantage.
WPI recorded the first six points of the second stanza and never looked back. The guests led by as many as 27 points (63-36) in the game's waning minutes, as they secured their fourth win in their last five opportunities.
Both clubs will resume league play on Wednesday. Mount Holyoke (3-15, 0-7 NEWMAC) will host Clark at 7pm, while WPI (10-8, 5-3) will entertain Wellesley at 7:30pm.
