Women's Hoops Knocks Off MIT on Senior Day to Tie For Third Place

Worcester, MA --- Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME) tallied a game-high 17 points and Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA) registered a double-double to help lift WPI to a 58-44 victory over visiting MIT on Saturday afternoon. The contest was the NEWMAC women's basketball regular season finale for both teams.
With the victory, WPI improves to 14-9 overall and 9-4 in NEWMAC play. With Springfield's loss to Coast Guard, WPI moves into a tie for third place but will be the fourth seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. MIT slips to 12-13 and 4-9 in league play. They end the regular season in a three-way tie with Clark and Wellesley in sixth play.
Dubois canned 8-of-11 shots from the floor and added seven boards on the day while Selen poured in 14 points and grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds. WPI received a spark off the bench from Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA), who tossed in 12 points en route to helping the hosts enjoy a 31-5 edge in reserve scoring.
WPI connected on 12-of-22 (54.5%) of its shots from the floor in the first half while limiting MIT to 18.5% (5-of-27). The defensive effort for the hosts was highlighted by a pair of blocks from Rachel Salvatori (Williston, VT) and Dubois in the final four seconds of the half. The home standing Engineers also enjoyed a 21-10 edge on the glass during the first 20 minutes.
Clara Yuan (San Jose, CA) paced the MIT offensive attack with 16 points while Cheryl Kwinn (Monroe, NY) chipped in with a double-double of her own (10 points and a game-best 12 rebounds) The visiting Engineers also received eight points from Samia Mahjib (Barrington, IL).
Both teams begin play in the NEWMAC Tournament on Wednesday. WPI will host fifth-seeded Babson at 7pm. MIT will be slotted between sixth and eighth depending the league tie-breakers released later Saturday afternoon. Based on its seed, MIT will travel to Wheaton, Coast Guard or Springfield.
