Women's Basketball to Host NEWMAC Tournament This Weekend
Worcester, MA --- By virtue of their first-place finish and #1 seed, WPI is proud to host the semifinals and championship game of the NEWMAC Women's Basketball Tournament after defeating #8 Mount Holyoke 52-42 in its opening round game Wednesday night at Harrington Auditorium.
WPI, under the tutelage of ninth-year head coach Cherise Galasso, is 20-5 on the season and completed NEWMAC play with a 12-1 mark. Seniors Natasha Deschene (Presque Isle, ME) and classmate Caitlin Macko (Cromwell, CT), are WPI's all-time winningest class (73 victories), while juniors Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA) and Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME) have combined to win four NEWMAC Players of the Week awards this winter.
Tournament action got underway Wednesday night with four first-round matchups. The top seeds prevailed in all four opening round games, setting up an exciting semifinal round on Saturday. WPI will take on Wheaton in the day's first game with tipoff scheduled for 12pm. The other semifinal matchup featuring Babson vs. Springfield will immediately follow. The winners will face each other in the NEWMAC Championship Game on Sunday at 12pm.
