Seniors Propel Women's Basketball Past Coast Guard 60-44
Worcester, MA --- Senior co-captains Theresa Logan (Southboro, MA) and Cindy Chelius (Northfield, NJ) combined for 28 points and 13 rebounds while WPI totaled 20 assists on 25 made baskets in a 60-44 triumph over visiting Coast Guard in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon.
The Engineers improve to 7-4 on the season and move to 3-2 in conference play while the Bears fall to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in NEWMAC action.
Both teams came out sizzling to start the game. WPI canned eight of its first 10 shots from the field while Coast Guard's Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, MA) drained four of her first five, including three 3-pointers, en route to scoring the Bears first 11 points.
The Engineers, who never trailed and led 37-28 at the half, used a 13-0 run sandwiched around intermission to push a 32-28 advantage into a 45-28 bulge five minutes into the second stanza. After the quick start by both offenses, it was the WPI defense that took center stage, limiting the Bears to 4-of-30 (13.3%) shooting and forcing eight turnovers over the final 23:39, while not seeing the lead go below single digits during the last 19:31.
Logan posted a team-best 18 points while Chelius tossed in a season-high 10. The duo corralled six and seven rebounds respectively. Dani Davis (East Granby, CT) flirted with a double-double, collecting nine points to go along with nine rebounds. Kelly Morgan (Brookline, NH) led four players with multiple assists by doling out a career-best six helpers.
Fornaro, who played scholastically at nearby Shepherd Hill Regional High School, tallied all 19 of her game-high points in the first half. The rookie connected on 7-of-11 opening stanza shots. Victoria Sutherland (Houston,TX) came off the bench to chip in 10 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line and three steals while Karli Collins (Delavan,WI) paced all players with 13 rebounds.
WPI plays its fourth of five straight home contests on Tuesday, welcoming Park Ave. rival Clark to Harrington Auditorium for a 7pm start. Coast Guard returns home Tuesday to face Babson in a 5:30pm match-up.
