Baseball (22-11 overall, 9-3 NEWMAC)

Top-seeded WPI tallied a 13-3 victory over sixth-seed Clark in the opening round of the NEWMAC Baseball Championship tournament on Thursday afternoon. The game, originally scheduled to be played at WPI but moved to Clark due to wet field conditions, was WPI's first NEWMAC Tournament game as the #1 seed.  Clark started the scoring in the top of the first, getting its first base runner of the game on a throwing error, then scoring on an RBI single to give the visiting Cougars a 1-0 lead on its home field.  The Engineers responded, scoring six runs over the first three innings to take control. Down 1-0 in the second, WPI got a one out solo homer to left from Matt Moreau (Manchester, NH) that tied the score. Then, with two outs, Jameson Kokolis (Manchester, NH) singled to center and Joe Walsh (Weymouth, MA) walked before leadoff hitter Mark Dignum (Albany, NY) drove a pitch over the fence in left-center for a three-run home run that gave WPI a 4-1 lead. The Engineers plated two more in the third, with Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) singling with one out before first-year third baseman Nick Bean (Middleboro, MA) sent another WPI home run clear of the fence in left-center for a 6-1 WPI lead.  Clark scored its second run in the fifth, getting an RBI double that cut the lead to 6-2. WPI closed the door on any potential comeback by Clark, scoring seven unanswered runs in its next three at-bats to put the game away. McNee hit a solo shot in the fifth, his team-leading seventh of the season, to make the score 7-2. In the sixth, Dignum followed a Walsh single to right with his second home run of the game to push the WPI advantage to 9-2. Shortstop Paul Galligan (Weymouth, MA) followed with a double, later scoring on a throwing error that gave WPI a 10-2 lead. The Engineers then began the seventh with four straight hits, with doubles from Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) and Kokolis and singles from Walsh and Dignum as WPI extended the lead to 13-2.  Clark plated its third run in the top of the ninth, getting a RBI single off reliever Bryan Watkins (Belmont, MA). Watkins threw two innings in relief of starter Conor Fahey (Cumberland, RI). The senior and reigning NEWMAC Co-Pitcher of the Week went the first seven frames, allowing only two unearned runs on two singles, while walking none and striking out 11. Fahey now has gone 32 straight innings without allowing an earned run.  Fahey improved to 6-1 with the victory. Dignum was 3-for-5 with six RBIs to lead the Engineers, while McNee was 4-for-5 and Walsh 3-for-4 with three runs scored.  On Friday, WPI dropped its first game of the NEWMAC Tournament, falling at home to third-seeded MIT 7-1.  MIT got on the board first versus freshman starter Sean Minor (Los Angeles, CA), plating a run in the top of the second to take an early advantage.  The visiting Engineers tacked on another run in the fourth, extending its lead to 2-0.  WPI scratched together a run in the fourth to get on the board and cut the MIT lead in half. McGregor came up with two out and the bases empty and blasted a line drive off the fence in center, pulling into second with a double. Watkins then came through with a single to center, sending McGregor home with the hosts' first run.  MIT got the run right back and more however, using a three-run rally to build upon its advantage to take a 5-1 lead.  McGregor and Galligan each had two hits in defeat for the hosts. Minor (4-2) allowed six runs, four earned, over 5 2/3 innings for WPI, dropping only his second game of the season.  Alex Hanson (Burlington, CT) and Justin Skelly (Derby, CT) provided the hosts with solid relief help.  Hanson allowed a run in 2 1/3 innings of work while Skelly tossed a scoreless ninth.  On Saturday, second-seeded and nationally ranked Wheaton knocked WPI out of the NEWMAC Tournament with a 5-3 win over WPI.  The Engineers, playing at home but as the visiting clue, struck first in the top half of the second inning.  With one out in the inning, Moreau sent a double into the right-center gap to give WPI its first runner in scoring position.  Mitch McClune (Pembroke, MA) followed with a clean single up the middle that sent Moreau plateward with the game's first run.  Wheaton tied the score in the bottom of the third and tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.  The Engineers chipped away at the lead in the top of the fifth.  McGregor led off the inning with a single to center, moving to second on a fielder's choice.  With two out in the inning, Dignum singled to left, driving in McGregor for WPI's second run.  Wheaton pushed across and insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and WPI answered in the top of the eighth, scoring one run on three straight singles from Bean, McNee and Moreau cutting the lead to 5-3.  The Lyons reliever extinguished a threat by getting the last three outs in the eighth, and tossing a scoreless ninth inning.  Moreau was 3-for-4 for WPI, who received hits from nine different players but fell two runs short of moving on in the tournament. Nolan Murphy (Shrewsbury, MA) took the loss for the Engineers, who received 4 2/3 innings of effective relief from Thomas Whiting (Farmington Hills, MI) that kept the game close in the late innings.  Baseball returns to the diamond on Monday when they host Fitchburg State at 4pm.

Softball (14-23 overall, 6-10 NEWMAC)

WPI Softball earned a doubleheader sweep over MIT, 8-0 and 4-1, in NEWMAC softball action on Monday. The win and subsequent coin flip allowed WPI to claim the sixth and final spot in the NEWMAC Tournament.  WPI starter Allie Hardy (Townsend, MA) kept her string of dominating performances going, tossing five shutout innings in the opener for her 10th win of the season (10-5). The freshman only allowed one hit, an infield single in the second inning. She struck out four in game one and lowered her ERA to 0.90 in her rookie season.  After MIT threatened in the top of the first of game one but did not score, WPI struck first in the home half, plating five runs to take command early. Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) led off the inning with a walk before Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) set up the WPI rally by reaching on a bunt single down the first base line. Following a wild pitch that moved up the runners, Jen Richards (Hampstead, NH) reached base via a dropped third strike and throwing error that sent home both runners for a 2-0 WPI lead. MIT recorded the first out of the inning on a fielder's choice before Kim Martilla (Kings Park, NY) walked. Amanda Martori (Haverhill, MA) laid down a sac bunt attempting to move the runners into scoring position, but a throwing error allowed her to reach, while a run scored and Martilla moved to third. Martori then stole second with Martilla scoring on the throw, and moved to third on a wild pitch. She scored the last run of the rally as Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) delivered her with a clean single to left for a 5-0 lead after one for the home club.  WPI was back at it in the bottom of the second, scoring two more runs to pad its lead. Maglione started things again, leading the inning off with a single. After MIT registered an out via strikeout, Richards drove a 1-0 pitch to deep left for her ninth home run of the season and a 7-0 WPI lead. Maglione also drove home the clinching run on a single to left in the bottom of the fifth. Richards and Maglione were honored between games in WPI's senior day festivities, along with senior catcher Sara Migdal (Galway, NY). Richards went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs in game one, while Maglione reached all four times, had three base hits, scored two runs and drove in one in the first game of her final home regular-season NEWMAC doubleheader.  The Crimson and Gray also got off to a good start in game two, scoring two runs in the second inning for an early 2-0 advantage. Migdal led off the inning with an infield single on the left side and moved to second on a wild pitch. Martilla followed with a base hit to center that moved Migdal to third. Martilla t then stole second for the second time of the afternoon before Martori drove Migdal home with the game's first run on a single to center. Martilla later scored on a fielder's choice, giving the home side a 2-0 lead after two.  In MIT's half of the fourth, the visitors were able to cut the WPI lead in half, thanks to a solo home run to make the score 2-1.  WPI responded however, tacking on two more runs for a 4-1 edge. Martilla singled with one out in the inning, followed by Martori reaching on a fielder's choice that forced Martilla out. Foley then drove a double into the gap in left-center, plating Martori before she came around to score herself on a throwing error that made the score 4-1 after four innings.  Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) got the start for WPI and pitched well in going the full seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out six. She improved her mark to 3-8 on the season.  On Thursday the Engineers dropped their opening game of the NEWMAC Tournament, a 5-3 defeat to Clark.  Both teams remained scoreless for more than half the game as WPI starter Hardy and the Clark starter posted zeros in the first four innings.  The Crimson and Gray were able to break up the scoreless game in the top of the fifth, plating a run on four singles to take a 1-0 lead.  K. Johnson and Foley produced back-to-back one-out singles before Martilla drove Johnson home with the game's first run with a base hit up the middle.  Clark was able to break through in the bottom half of the inning however, taking the lead away from the Engineers.  After a leadoff single and a move to second on a sacrifice, the Cougars came around to score with an RBI single and would later score again to take a 2-1 lead.  The Engineers responded immediately in their half of the sixth, scoring twice to regain the advantage. Allie Roche (Chelmsford, MA) led off the WPI sixth with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt to start the rally.  Maglione followed and was able to reach via a passed ball on a strikeout that advanced Roche to third.  Roche would then score on a fielding error, while Maglione later scored on a Foley RBI groundout to right field, giving WPI a 3-2 lead.  Clark came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead and eventual win.  Hardy (10-6) went the distance for the Engineers, allowing five runs on 12 hits over six innings. Martori and Migdal led WPI with two hits each.  On Saturday, WPI was bounced from the NEWMAC Tournament when Coast Guard hit a walk off three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to take a 3-1 win.  Foley's RBI single scored pinch runner Flaherty in the top of the eighth inning.  Each team had just one hit through the first five innings.  Maglione led off the game with a single while the Bears mustered a single in the fourth inning.  Hardy (10-7) allowed six hits, two earned runs and struck out five in taking the loss.  WPI Softball will close out their season on Monday hosting a doubleheader versus MCLA.
