Men's Soccer (9-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 NEWMAC)
In a much-anticipated meeting of two teams expected to vie for
NCAA Tournament bids, Clark and NEWMAC rival WPI played to a 1-1
tie in a men's soccer matchup on Saturday afternoon on Granger
Field. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead on a free kick at the 34:15
mark. WPI answered back moments before the first half ended when
Tommy Zajac (Merrimack, NH) served in a pass that
was headed home by Mike Ford (Whitman, MA) for his
fourth goal of the year. Things remained the same for the remainder
of regulation and both overtimes as both teams missed on scoring
opportunities. The game was even all around, as Clark held a slight
edge in shots (11-10) and WPI had a 6-5 lead in corner kicks.
Paul Moan (Watertown, MA) turned back two shots
for the Engineers. WPI now sits at 9-2-1 and will host Fitchburg
State in its next match on Thursday.
Women's Soccer (5-8 overall, 1-3 NEWMAC)
Women's Soccer was 1-1 during the past week, falling to Wheaton on Tuesday before rebounding with a 1-0 home win over Mount Holyoke. Five different Wheaton players notched goals to help the regionally ranked Lyons defeat the Engineers. Liz Schreiber (Ashfield, MA), Hailey Taylor (Colusa, CA) and Victoria Howland (Red Hook, NY) all recorded shots for WPI, who was outshot 17-3 on the evening. Ally Stoyle (Pembroke, MA) and Rebecca Newman (Howell, NJ) combined for three saves for the hosts. The Crimson and Gray bounced back from the setback however, besting Mount Holyoke 1-0 on Saturday to pick up the team's first conference win. Senior Liz Tuite (Hopkinton, MA) netted the only goal of the game and freshman Newman registered her second shutout of the season. The Engineers turned a corner kick into the match's only goal in the 30th minute when Taylor sent the ball into the box and it deflected off the Mount Holyoke goalkeeper to Tuite, who tucked it into the goal for her first marker of the year and second of her career. The assist was Taylor's team-best fifth this fall. The Lyons had a pair of good chances to even the match, but had a direct kick from 25-yards out float over the cross bar in the 70th minute while Schreiber cleared away another Lyons chance five minutes later. The Crimson and Gray nearly added to their lead in the 72nd minute but Kristen Garza's (Kingston, MA) blistering shot hit the post. The Lyons enjoyed a slight 12-9 edge in shots and took seven of the game's nine corner kicks. Garza attempted a team-high three shots for the Engineers. WPI returns to the field on Tuesday when they head to Wellesley for a 4:15pm road match.
Field Hockey (9-3 overall, 3-1 NEWMAC)
WPI Field Hockey picked up two close conference wins this week, earning a one-goal win over Wheaton on Tuesday before defeating Mount Holyoke 2-1 in penalty strokes. The wins propel the Engineers to 3-1 in the NEWMAC, 9-3 overall. Tuesday's win over Wheaton was the fourth time in five years that the teams were separated by just one goal. Five of the Engineers' wins have now come via a shutout, while the other three were in overtime. Keepers Allie Griffin (Billerica, MA) and Elizabeth Ray (Simsbury, CT) split time for WPI. Griffin made five saves for the win, and Ray had three in relief. Wheaton finished with advantages of 14-11 in shots and 14-7 in penalty corners, as it had two chances to score during an early penalty-corner sequence in the ninth minute. WPI senior Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) made a defensive save midway through the stanza. In the 25th minute, WPI freshman Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA) sent a strike from the top of the circle that Bagley kicked away, but the Engineers broke the deadlock soon thereafter. Wigley pushed a penalty-corner entry pass to sophomore Celena Dopart (Washington, DC), whose stick stop set up Johnson's drive into the lower left of the cage at 25:09. Wheaton pushed to tie during the second half with Ray denying the Lyons' scoring opportunity in the 54th minute. On Saturday, after playing to a 1-1 tie after regulation and two 15 minute overtime periods, WPI prevailed in a penalty stroke-off competition to secure a thrilling 2-1 triumph Mount Holyoke. Both squads went scoreless until the 59:37 mark, when the Lyons capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity to record the first goal of the afternoon. Refusing to go away, the Engineers knotted things up at 1-1 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. Wigley broke past several defenders into the circle and slipped a feed to junior midfielder Meghan Linskey (Bridgewater, MA), who collected the pass on the doorstep and placed a shot into the vacated cage. Each side went scoreless over the remainder of regulation and two overtime sessions, resulting in a penalty stroke-off competition. With the contest in the balance WPI outscored Mount Holyoke 5-4 in the stroke-off to seal the win. Mount Holyoke fell despite overwhelming advantages in both shots (27-8) and penalty corner chances (12-4). Griffin got the start between the pipes for the Engineers. She made five saves in the first half before giving way to Ray, who turned away 12 shots over the final 65 minutes. Ray was a standout on the stroke-off, where she made several sprawling stops. The Engineers will resume their NEWMAC slate on Tuesday at 7pm when they will host Wellesley.
Volleyball (17-5 overall, 1-4 NEWMAC)
WPI Women's Volleyball suffered through a tough week, going 0-2 to fall to 17-5 on the season. On Tuesday night, the Engineers dropped a tough 3-1 decision (25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 25-22) to NEWMAC rival Smith. WPI fell to 1-4 in the conference. The match as hard fought throughout with neither team enjoying more than a six point advantage. Smith rallied from a early 5-0 deficit to claim the second set while WPI staved off a match point in the third stanza to claim its first set win over the Pioneers since 1999. Freshman Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) led the charge for the Engineers coming up with a double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs. Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) turned in 16 assists on the evening while Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) and Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) had impressive dig numbers of 22 and 18 respectively. Rookie Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) aided the Crimson attack with five kills and a pair of blocks. The Engineers then fell to Roger Williams in a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening, 3-1 (25-16, 25-13, 16-25, 25-14). Sarber and Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) amassed nine and seven kills respectively for WPI, who was defeated for the first time in 18 non-conference contests this fall. Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) and Rangel combined for 17 assists for the hosts while Porambo accounted for 26 digs and Sarber totaled 18 digs to go along with three blocks. Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) distinguished herself with four kills and four digs for the Engineers. After a weekend off, WPI returns to action on Tuesday with a 7pm home conference match with NEWMAC co-leader MIT.
