Norwich 28, WPI Wrestling 15
Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Chris Best (Eagle, CO) registered a pin late in overtime at 165 pounds to help Norwich defeat host WPI 28-15 in wrestling action on Friday evening. With the win the Cadets improve to 2-0 on the young season while WPI drops to 0-1.
The match, which was tied at 6-6 late in regulation, saw plenty of drama. WPI's Matt Wainwright, (North Attleboro, MA), wrestling up two weight classes, scored a point at the final horn to help offset Best's riding time advantage and force overtime. Best was able to secure the critical six points for the Cadets when he pinned Wainwright, who battled through an apparent leg injury at the end of regulation and overtime.
After WPI's Larry Loomis (Plainfield, CT) and Adam Kreitman (Salem, NH) posted thrilling victories at 174 and 184 pounds to close the Norwich advantage to 16-15, Rick LaGrega (Colchester, VT) and Cody Lightfoot (Elliot, ME) notched first period pins at 197 and 285 to secure the win for the Cadets.
The Engineers received a boast early in the match when Carl Anderson (Billerica, MA) collected a pin at 125 pounds and David Laramee (Rockland, MA) won a decision at 149. Norwich posted wins by Alfredo Fontana (Turnbull, CT) at 133 pounds, Mike Conklin (Toms River, NJ) at 141 and a major decision from Brennan Ward (Waterford, CT) at 157.
Both teams return to the mat on Wednesday. WPI will venture to Springfield for a 7:30 match while Norwich will entertain Williams at 7pm.
