Guzman Leads Wrestling to 28-20 Victory Over Coast Guard

Worcester, MA --- Scott Guzman's (Acton, ME) first period pin at 184 pounds highlighted WPI's 28-20 win over visiting Coast Guard in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action Tuesday evening. With the victory, the Engineers improve to 5-10 on the season while Coast Guard falls to 2-8.
WPI jumped out to a 9-0 advantage when sixth-ranked Larry Loomis (Plainfield, CT) opened the match with a 6-1 victory at 174 pounds before Guzman pinned his opponent at 1:51. The Bears came back quickly when Dan Sorby (Bemidji, MN) scored a 4-0 victory at 197 and heavyweight Troy Robison (Yuba City, CA) recorded a pin at 1:50 of the first period.
133-pounder Andrew Armstrong (Bethel Park, PA) earned a pin for Coast Guard at 4:40 that was sandwiched between WPI forfeit wins by Carl Anderson (Billerica, MA) at 125 and Jeff Root (Milford, CT) at 141. The Crimson and Gray then secured the victory when Matt Wainwright (North Attleboro, MA) registered an 11-4 win at 149 and freshman Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) collected a 15-3 major decision at 157.
Coast Guard's Colin Boyle (Ridgefield, WA), ranked fourth at 165 pounds, closed out the evening with a tech fall at 5:14 (16-1).
WPI returns to action on Thursday at 7:30pm with a home match versus Wesleyan. Coast Guard ventures to West Point, NY on Saturday where they will participate in the All-Academy Championships hosted by Army.
