Wrestling Suffers Loss at Wesleyan, 40-12

Scott Guzman

Wesleyan 40, WPI 12

Middletown, CT --- Despite match victories from the Engineers' Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, CT) and Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) and a pin from Scott Guzman (Acton, ME), WPI Wrestling dropped a 40-12 decision at Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Engineers to 7-7 on the season.

LaBeef won the first match of the day 6-5, thanks to a key reversal at the end of the third period that turned a one-point deficit into a one-point victory. The early 3-0 lead for WPI was short-lived however, as Wesleyan registered a major decision at 149 pounds to take a 4-3 lead.

Howe helped the Engineers retake the lead in the third match of the day, shutting out his opponent 3-0 en route to a 6-4 lead for the Engineers. The Cardinals raced past WPI following Howe's win, notching three consecutive pins to take a 22-6 lead.

Guzman held a lead throughout his match at 197 pounds, but stepped up his effort to register a pin with only 27 seconds left in his match to give WPI a six point boost. However, WPI was forced to forfeit the heavyweight match due to injury, and two Wesleyan pins at 125 and 133 pounds respectively, ended the match and chance for victory for the Crimson and Gray.

WPI Wrestling heads out on the road to New London, CT for their next match, where they will take on Coast Guard on Tuesday at 7:00pm.
