Trio of Wrestlers Reach Day Two at NEWA Championships

Tyler Howe
Springfield, MA --- WPI wrestlers Carl Anderson (Billerica, MA), Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) and Scott Guzman (Acton, ME) advanced to the second day of competition at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships at Springfield and in the process assured themselves All-New England status. WPI is ends day one with 22 points, and stands in 12th place.
Howe reached the winner's bracket semifinals at 157 pounds with a bye and a 3-2 win over an opponent from Southern Maine before falling 8-6 in overtime to the top-seeded wrestler from Rhode Island College. After a opening round win at 197 pounds, Guzman also ran into the top seed and fell into the loser's bracket. The senior defeated his opponent from Wesleyan to reach the second day. Anderson, who hadn't wrestled since December due to injury, quickly fell into the loser's bracket with a first round loss, but recovered to reach Sunday by defeating wrestlers from Southern Maine and Plymouth State.
The Engineers also received single wins on the day from 174-pounder Larry Loomis (Plainfield, CT) and 149-pounder Matt Wainwright (North Attleboro, MA). Loomis picked up a major decision in his opening match but his bid for his third straight All-New England honor was stopped by a pair of losses. Wainwright notched a pin in the consolation round before being eliminated by his opponent from Southern Maine.
Other competitors from WPI included Rich Wingert (Hyde Park, MA) at 133 pounds, Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, MA) at 141 and Garrett Yablonski (Mt. Sinai, NY) at 184. Joe Vanni (Hamilton, MA) lost his opening match at 165 and medically forfeited his second bout, while sophomore Anthony Corbo (Port Washington, NY) weighed in 285 pounds but did not wrestle due to injury.
