WPI 29, Norwich 12

Worcester, MA --- WPI captured six consecutive bouts, bookended by first period pins by heavyweight Anthony Corbo (Port Washington, NY) and 157-pound Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) to highlight a 29-12 victory over visiting Norwich in wrestling action on Saturday afternoon. 

Later in the day, WPI defeated Rensselaer by a score of 46-6, while Norwich also topped RPI 37-18. 

The Engineers (2-0) were led by regionally-ranked Tyler Howe in the 157-pound weight class, who won by pin in both of his matches, the first coming in only 38 seconds. Howe's effort highlighted six WPI wrestlers who were multiple winners on the day. Larry Loomis (Plainfield, CT) won his first match at 184 pounds by an 8-5 decision to turn the tide after the Engineers had fallen behind by dropping the first match of the day. After Norwich jumped back ahead by a 9-3 score, Corbo's pin tied the score at 9-9 and ignited WPI to six match wins in a row on their way to defeating the Cadets (0-2) for their first victory on the season. 

Howe, Loomis, Matt Wainwright (North Attleboro, MA), Rich Wingert (Hyde Park, MA), Carl Anderson (Billerica, MA) and Alex Pittera (Salem, NH) each registered two wins on the day. Loomis notched his second victory on the day via pin in only 1:38, while Wingert dominated the 133-pound class by rolling to a 13-0 win by major decision in his first match against Norwich, and by first-round pin vs. Rensselaer (4-6). 

Norwich had three wrestlers earn multiple wins on the day.  Jake Ferguson (Beaver Falls, NY) turned the trick in two different weight classes (174 and 184) while Cody Rideout (Londonderry, NH) and Clayton Brittingham (Snowville, MD) also both won twice, including one pin each at 197 and 165 pounds respectively.   

Rensselaer's Brian Jennings (Ovid, NY) also had an outstanding afternoon.  The heavyweight notched a pair of pins while the Redhawks also got pins against Norwich from Timothy Shields (Otter Valley, VT) at 133 pounds and Ryan Michaels (Pottstown, PA) at 157.

WPI returns to the mat on Wednesday when they venture to Springfield for a 7:30pm match.  Both Norwich and Rensselaer are off until January.  The Cadets will be participating in the Scott Viera Invitational hosted by Roger Williams on Sunday, January 4th while the Engineers will be taking part in the Michael J. Caruso Invitational at Northampton CC on January 18th.
