Springfield, MA --- Spurred by two pins in the last three bouts, the Springfield wrestling team went on to defeat WPI, 28-11, tonight at Springfield College's Blake Arena. With the win, the Pride is now 1-0, while the Engineers fall to 2-1. Entering the week, Springfield was ranked third in the weekly New England Wrestling Association Coaches Poll, while WPI was ranked 10th in the same poll.
WPI won the first two bouts, and three of the first five to build an 11-6 lead. Winners for the Crimson and Gray include junior Carl Anderson (Billerica, MA) at 125, freshman Rich Wingert (Hyde Park, MA) at 133, and sophomore Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) at 157 pounds. Wingert and Howe notched their victories by major decision.
Springfield stormed back, winning the last five bouts, which included pins from sophomore Anthony Dalesandro (Netcong, NJ) at 184, and senior Chris Brown (East Hartford, CT) at heavyweight. The Pride scored the last 22 points of the match.
Other winners for Springfield included freshman Ryan McGilvray (Manalapan, NJ) at 141, sophomore Steve Flathers (Stratford, CT) at 149, junior Chris Perry (East Fishkill, NY) at 165, sophomore Victor Stanziale (Bloomfield, NJ) at 174, and senior Greg Dussol (Amston, CT) at 197.
WPI is back in action on Saturday with a tri-match at Johnson & Wales with Oneonta State.
