April 7, 2014 Wrestling's Amato Receives American Legion Military Excellence Award Worcester, MA --- WPI freshman wrestler Brian Amato was recently honored with the American Legion Military Excellence Award by the Army ROTC. The award recognizes general military excellence. To be eligible for the American Legion Military Excellence Award, a cadet must rank in the top 25% of their Military Science class and demonstrate outstanding qualities in military leadership, discipline, character and citizenship. March 2, 2014 | Perruccio and Amato Finish Fourth for Wrestling at NCAA Regionals Middletown, CT --- WPI wrestlers Mike Perruccio and Brian Amato registered fourth place showings at the NCAA Division III Northeast regional as the Engineers concluded action Sunday in the two-day tournament hosted by Wesleyan. As a team, the Crimson and Gray amassed 54 points and finished tied for eighth in the 18-team tournament with Oneonta State. The regional tournament marks the end of a season that saw WPI posted its most dual wins in decade with the five wrestlers competing Sunday combining to win 119 bouts this winter. >>
March 1, 2014 | Five Alive: Amato, Four Others Advance to Day Two of NCAA Wrestling Regionals Middletown, CT --- Brian Amato reached the semifinals by winning a pair of matches Saturday to headline the WPI wrestling team’s performance on the opening day of the NCAA Division IIII Northeast Championships hosted by Wesleyan. Amato and teammates Brian Jennings, Tyler Tilbe, Mike Perruccio and Alex Freilich are still alive in two-day NCAA national qualifier as the Engineers sit in eighth place as team with 29 points. Amato, the two seed at 125 pounds, began his day with a rare first period tech fall (15-0) over his opponent from Plymouth State before grinding out a 3-2 win against an Oswego State wrestler. >>
February 15, 2014 | Wrestling Closes Out Dual Meet Campaign with a Split at Western New England Springfield, MA --- The WPI wrestling team concluded the 2013-14 dual meet season at Western New England on Saturday afternoon, defeating the host Golden Bears 45-6 before dropping a tough 24-16 decision to Brockport State in the finale. Multiple winners on the day for WPI included Tyler Tible, Torin Zonfrelli and Justin Marsh. The Crimson and Gray finish the dual meet season with a 12-11 record, the most wins in a decade. >>
February 12, 2014 | Marsh, Tilbe and Amanto Grab Victories for WPI Against Springfield Worcester, MA --- Will Henson’s 9-7 sudden victory win at 184 pounds started a run that saw Springfield win the final three bouts en route to defeating host WPI 23-13 in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) match-up on Wednesday evening. WPI had jumped out to a 9-3 advantage with a forfeit from Brian Amato at 125 pounds and a 6-3 victory by Tyler Tilbe at 141 sandwiched between a Tyler Keane 5-2 win for Springfield at 133. Justin Marsh (major decision) also claimed a win for WPI. >>
February 9, 2014 | WPI Wrestling Splits at Tri-Match at Coast Guard with Bridgewater State New London, CT --- The quartet of Brian Amato, Tyler Tilbe, Mike Perruccio and Alex Freilich all registered multiple victories as the WPI wrestling team split a tri-match on Sunday at Coast Guard. The Engineers cruised past Bridgewater State 44-6 in the opener before dropping a 17-16 heartbreaker to the host Bears in the finale. WPI is now 11-9 on the season and have won 10 of 15 dual matches over the past month. >>
February 3, 2014 | WPI Athletes of the Week #20 Wrestling's Alex Freilich and Women's Swimming and Diving's Sonja Kent were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Freilich, ranked regionally at 184 pounds, moved up to 197 where he registered a first period pin against his opponent from Plymouth State before defeating the third-ranked wrestler from Southern Maine 5-2 while Kent was dominant in the distance freestyles in a 129-102 triumph over Wheaton on Saturday, capturing the 1,000-yard in a time of 11:06.62 and the 500-yard in 5:27.05. >>
February 1, 2014 | Wrestling Sweeps Tri-Meet at Southern Maine with Plymouth State Gorham, ME --- The WPI wrestling team ventured to Northern New England Saturday and used two different scoring strategies to come back to Worcester with a sweep. The Engineers compiled six pins en route to taking a 40-15 decision in the opener against Plymouth Maine before using eight decisions, including three majors to knock off host Southern Maine 27-12. The victories push WPI’s overall record to 10-8 on the win and equals the most wins in a season along with the 2008-2009 team in a decade. >>
January 29, 2014 | Wrestling: Perruccio Atop New England Rankings; Team Cited for Academic Success Middletown, CT ---, WPI senior Mike Perruccio has risen to number one in the latest New England individual rankings released by the New England Wrestling Association. He is one of eight WPI wrestlers to appear in the rankings this week. Perruccio went 4-0 Sunday en route to being tabbed to the All-Tournament team at the NEWA Duals. He has won 12 straight bouts, including all 11 of his matches in 2014, is 18-4 on the season with three pins and a major decision. >>
January 26, 2014 | Amato, Tilbe and Perruccio go 12-0 as Wrestling Finishes Sixth at NEWA Duals Bridgewater, MA --- Brian Amato, Tyler Tilbe and Mike Perruccio combined to go 12-0 as WPI split four matches to finish sixth at the NEWA Dual Meet Championships hosted by Bridgewater State on Sunday. The Engineers (8-8), who entered the 14-team event seeded sixth, opened with a 43-6 win over No. 11 Bridgewater State before falling 32-10 to eventual champions No. 3 Roger Williams. WPI rebounded by defeating No. 7 Wesleyan 29-13 and then dropped a 25-9 decision to No. 5 Williams in the fifth place match. >>
January 21, 2014 | Worcester Polytechnic Institute Names Laurie Leshin as its 16th President Worcester, MA --- After a six-month intensive search, the Board of Trustees of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has elected Laurie Leshin, PhD, as the university's 16th president. Over the past 20 years, Leshin, a geochemist and space scientist, established herself as both an academic and administrative leader, having cultivated an impressive career at NASA, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Arizona State University (ASU), and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Leshin was selected to lead WPI from an initial candidate pool of approximately 200. >>
